Traincation

As I am airborne heading to La Jolla I would like to preface this post with the fact that I know I’ve been blessed with Tom & Laura creating an environment and lifestyle to promote the healthiest of vacations always.  T&L have taught me how to continue to maintain fitness no matter where we are in the world because our health is a nonnegotiable.  I’m going to share with you a few tips that will help you stay on track(literally and figuratively) when you are recharging the batteries.

First and foremost on vacation we all rise and get our cup of coffee to enjoy as a family upstairs(I am usually first asleep and last to wake up while Meagan sets an alarm to ensure she maintains the status of favorite child).  After our morning brew there is an unwritten rule that everyone in the house goes out for their morning run, almost as if it is part of our circadian rhythm, our legs start to itch and we are ready to roll. The ex-boyfriends that have joined us on family vacay have seen this morning ritual and have had to keep themselves busy for a few hours every morning(when in reality they probably would have benefitted greatly from lacing up their trainers as well).  The Schmitt gals run together gabbing the entire time, while Jake listens to Queen B and Tom enjoys unplugging and running listening to just his breath(crazy if ya ask me).

After our run we often meet up on a grass field where one of the five will mention doing core or taking an ice bath in the ocean.  The concept of accountability is huge here. Surrounding yourself with people that will want to do the same things you want to do.  Go on vacation with people who want to better you as they better themselves.

On vacation we don’t often make time to double as we are out and about playing.  A great strategy to account for the lack of a double is to walk everywhere.  We park the rental car in our driveway and don’t touch it again until we have to drive back to the airport on the other side.  Most people don’t know that a mile walked and a mile run has the same caloric burn, yes running is a LOT more efficient as you can run several more miles in an hour than walk, but to account for the double, walking everywhere is a great strategy.

Most vacation spots are begging for an active and outdoor day, don’t go into the horrible hotel gym, pack your goggles, get on the beach, play in the ocean for an hour, make Meagan teach you how to play volleyball, walk off the dinner and recharge your body with the vitamin D.

As far as packing is concerned, I have learned to prepare for movement.  The cutest pair of shoes I brought are Teva’s with my Pegasus a close second.  The only clothing that I brought which isn’t under the realm of athleisure is my pair of overalls that I plan to wear when it is too hot for my align pants. To get an idea of what I  pack, it’s 5 sets of my complete running outfit as seen on this blog post, 2 pairs of align pants, 2 pairs of running shoes, 1 hoodie, my beyond yoga tanks I live in, sweats, and toiletries.  I am pretty sure people recognize me on vacation because I am an avid outfit repeater.

When it comes to eating and drinking out on vacation you gotta live. If you are traveling internationally enjoy every aspect, bite and taste of the country. I don’t count calories but do have a pretty good hold on when my body feels full. I don’t drink alcohol because I want to feel my very best and brightest self the next morning of vacation.  Eating well consistently at home gives you the ability to try new things and see how your body operates on them. I tried fried collard greens at the Texas State fair and will never be eating those again…cause… gross, but you better believe I’ll be going back to Copenhagen for that pizza on the dock(@aliyashirif). Experience everything.

Catch ya on the other side of vacation with a recipe<3
